Lee County, Illinois has it all--biking, boating, fishing, golfing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, swimming and more. Amboy Depot Museum: This Illinois Central Railroad Depot, built in 1876, has been completely renovated and is now a 19-room museum reflecting the history of the Amboy area. Other attractions adjoining the museum include: a steam locomotive on display, a one-room schoolhouse, the Illinois Central Freight House, and a 1920’s era Norfolk & Western caboose all open to tour. Free admission. Donations welcome. John Deere Historic Site: Visitors can visit the restored John Deere home and view the archaeological display of his original shop complete with practicing blacksmith. Ronald Reagan Trail: Young Ronald Reagan, hitch-hiking home to Dixon from Eureka College, probably never thought that the trek from school would be significant to anyone other than him and his brother who thumbed a ride alongside him. Boating and Fishing: The Rock River is a popular boating waterway for motorboats, pontoon boats, fishing boats & canoes. Virtually all of the campgrounds and parks in Lee County offer fishing in ponds, lakes, streams or rivers. The Rock River's reputation for catfish, bass, carp and walleye is widespread. Hiking: Hiking trails can be found throughout Lee County in every park and conservation area. At Franklin Creek State Natural Area, horseback riding and equestrian camping are permitted. Lee County also offers one of the very few trails that is easily accessible to people of all mobility levels, as well as picnic benches and barbecue grills at intervals along the trail.
